Early British literature

 

The British literature is one of the most important literatures in Europe and on the world. The oldest monument is Epic of Beowulf, which is also the first non-Roman literary monument in Europe. The first English writing author is John Wycliffe, who influenced Master John Huss because of his critics if church and society; he translated the Bible to English. The other well-known author is Geoffrey Chaucer; he was a poet, who wrote the Canterbury Tales. He describes there the contemporary English society.

 

The other era of English literature is Renaissance, which is dated since 1485 until 1603. The first important author is Thomas More, known for his work Utopia; he was a sir, because he was named as lord – chancellor; at the same king he was beheaded, because he said, that the king shouldn't be a head of the Anglican church. The second author in Renaissance is Christopher Marlowe; the best his work is Tragical History about Doctor Faustus. The third author is William Shakespeare; it is the most famous English playwright; the main works are e.g. Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello.

 

The most famous author in 18th century is John Milton. He was a priest and one of the most important poets. His best-known work is Lost Paradise (or Regained Paradise), which contains a critic view on the church; it is about the Satan, who revolts against all Saints and a God.

 

The 18th century authors there are Jonathan Swift and Henry Fielding. The first one is a satirist and poet; the best work is a Gulliver's Travels. The second one wrote political plays; for them there is distinctive a sharp critics of society; the most known work is Tom Jones; it is about a foundling.

 

The other period in English and European literature is Romanticism (dated from 1793 until 1820). The most important authors are: Samuel Coleridge, George G. Byron, John Keats and Walter Scott. The first one, Samuel Coleridge, was a poet; his work is The Rime of the ancient Mariner; it is about an old sailor, who describes his youth; he shot the albatross, what brought him shipwrecking. G. G. Byron was a poet; his life is very complex and interesting; his work is e.g. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. John Keats is the most important Romantic poet; the main work is the Ode on an ancient Urn. W. Scott is last author; he is a founder of British historical novel; his main works are: Ivanhoe and Waverley; both of them are situated to era after Norman conquest.
