Media

We can say, that media are thing, which influences us very strongly. The definitions of this term are various. I would define it as a factory, where are produced all-sorted information. These information are provided for a big number of the people, who are influenced or manipulated by them.

The form, in which the information are produced, can be written and spoken word, and also picture. Written word can be found in press, spoken word in radio and television, and the picture in the television. All forms are contained in the Internet.

The first form I will speak about is the press. It is also called the seventh power. We can speak about two general types of press: the newspaper and the periodicals. The newspapers can be daily or weekly printed. The structure: the heading consists the name of the newspapers, date, sometimes the day, the price, the issue and the volume. Under the headings there is the editorial, which usually describes the most important event of the day. Other articles inform about the home events, the events in abroad, about the culture, sport etc. The important part is also the announce. The newspaper are individually divided also into yellow and serious. The yellow press wants to affect sensation, it is interested e.g. in the private life of famous personalities, it is nonobjective. The opposite is serious press, which wants to describe and inform the people objectively and truly. The examples of the newspapers: in Great Britain The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Times, Manchester Guardian, in United States The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New York Herald Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, The USA Today.

Magazines and periodicals are bound, paper-covered publications issued regularly--usually weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or quarterly--to inform, instruct, or entertain. Most fall into one of these categories: consumer or general; trade and technical, industry, finance, government, and the scholarly disciplines; farm; and literary journals. The examples: The Economist, The National Geographic, The Nature, The Foreign Affairs, The Collier's.

Radio is based on the transfer of information by spoken word and music. The advantage of the radio is faster way of getting information than press. The radio broadcasting provides e.g. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, The Voice of America.

The television gives the information by the picture and the sound. It is more effective than radio, because the picture gives us quick imagination. The disadvantage is, that the picture describes three-dimensional world through two dimensions, so the reality is distorted.

The Internet, also the World Wide Web, is contemporary most dynamically expanding medium. The information are transferred in all forms I named – by written and spoken word, picture and music, but in an electronic form. The data are transferred by optic fibers, by electromagnetic waves etc.

My final opinion on the media is about this: I respect the influence of the media, but I think that the media should be controlled and created by all the people. They are too dangerous, when they are directed by only one person or by small group of people.
